What is a Deep Cleansing Facial?

The deep cleansing facial is a tried and true facial procedure that I'm sure is on every service menu in a facial treatment room. Deep Cleansing Facials deeply cleanse and refine the pores. It is best suited for acne skin, oily skin, or anyone with a build-up of dead skin cells, clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, and other acne lesions. It is one of the best treatments to achieve and maintain clear skin.

A deep cleansing facial utilizes a combination of facial techniques depending on the skin's needs. Generally, it includes exfoliation of dead skin cells, extraction of blackheads, whiteheads, and any other acne lesions that may be present.

Skin Analysis

After a thorough skin analysis, the Esthetician will cleanse your skin to remove dirt and oil from the skin's surface. After cleansing, a relaxing and stimulating facial massage is performed under steam to loosen dead skin cells and soften the skin. This procedure will immediately refresh the skin, and in the words of my clients' your face will feel much "lighter" and "airier." However, if you have inflamed acne, a facial massage or steam treatment is not recommended.

Types of Exfoliation

The type of exfoliation may be corrective treatments such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs), Enzyme Therapy, or manual exfoliation. The skin's need determines the appropriate form of exfoliation as ascertained by the skin analysis.

Any AHA or BHA treatments used during a facial is considered light chemical peels. Light chemical peels do not necessarily peel the skin. They work on a microscopic level. AHA works on the outer surface to exfoliate the skin, while BHA helps clean out the build-up of dead skin cells from inside the pores. Exfoliation is an integral part of facial treatments. It significantly improves skin texture, softens the skin for extraction, and makes it easier for active ingredients to absorb into the skin.

Enzymes work by digesting the dead skin cell on the skin's surface. Enzymes are often combined with steam depending on the skin's need. Bromelain enzyme comes from pineapple and is one of the most effective enzymes. It reduces inflammation on the skin and breaks down dead skin cells that cause build-up. Unlike bromelain, pumpkin enzyme is mild and non-irritating and is suitable for sensitive or reactive skin. Papaya enzyme exfoliates dead skin cells and soothes skin irritation.

Extractions

Extraction is a necessary part of a deep cleansing facial. The extraction process aids in the elimination of bacteria from the impacted pores and removes the acne lesions on the skin's surface to facilitate wound healing.

Electric Therapy

The use of electrical treatments such as High Frequency or LED therapy is often done after extraction to soothe the pores, decrease inflammation, increase circulation, and combat acne bacteria. These treatments have many other benefits.

Facial Masque Therapy

Clay-based facial masques are the most common type of masque therapy used during a deep cleansing facial. Some of the most popular clays used in face masques are Bentonite clay, French Green clay, Kaolin clays, and Rhassoul clay. Clay masques work by absorbing excess oil and impurities from the pores. Clays are rich in minerals that have skin detoxifying benefits.

How often should you get a Deep Cleansing Facial?

If you are struggling with acne skin, you should get a deep cleansing treatment every two weeks. Regular corrective exfoliation will keep the pores clean and clear. Acne lesions form under the skin ninety days in advance. These lesions are called microcomedones and are the precursor to acne lesions on the skin's surface. Frequent Deep Cleansing Facials will prevent microcomedones from forming. With regular deep cleansing, you will not have to worry about having blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples anymore.

If you have oily skin without acne lesions, a monthly facial or a facial done every six weeks will significantly improve the appearance of your skin.
